Why Smart Hip Guardian
What is the Smart Hip Guardian?
The Smart Hip Guardian is a personal protection device designed to help prevent hip injuries and fractures from falling. Its technology has the ability to distinguish between everyday activities and a real fall event. In the event of a fall, the Smart Hip Guardian deploys protective air defense pads to help absorb the fall and prevent injuries.
Who is the Smart Hip Guardian intended for?
This device was designed for those who are particularly at risk of hip injuries following a fall. It is designed primarily for older people who, due to mobility difficulties and/or weakening of the bone structure, are statistically more predisposed to falling and suffering hip injuries.
Nonetheless, even young people who are particularly exposed to the risk of falling (Parkinson's disease, Epilepsy, Alzheimer's, etc.) or to the consequences of a fall on the hip (previous hip operations, prosthesis wearers, etc.) can benefit from the protection of the Smart Hip Guardian.
Besides the physical protection, the Smart Hip Guardian offers the wearer confidence to move freely and encourages a more active lifestyle.
Functionality
How does the Smart Hip Guardian work?
The Smart Hip Guardian Belt uses patented fall-detection technology to monitor for movements that would result in a serious hip impact.
- Once a pending fall is recognized, the Smart Hip Guardian deploys protective air-defense padding around both hips before the person impacts the ground to help avoid a hip injury or fracture. This inflation happens in 0.2 seconds.
- The inflated air-defense pads begin immediate deflation to help absorb fall and prevent rebound injuries.
- Once deployed, the Smart Hip Guardian automatically contacts emergency services and three (3) designated caregivers.
- Information regarding the fall event is recorded and shared back with the Smart Hip Guardian owner to create awareness of the event and to help provide recommendations on avoiding future falls.
How do I turn the Smart Hip Guardian on and off?
The Smart Hip Guardian must be charged and buckled to activate. There is an LED light alert system in the buckle that lets you know that the product is active and charged.
To turn on, simply buckle the charged Smart Hip Guardian. To turn off, simply unbuckle the Smart Hip Guardian.
Can the airbags deploy if the Smart Hip Guardian is not being worn?
The Smart Hip Guardian is only activated when the belt is buckled. Keeping the belt unbuckled when not wearing will prevent unwanted airbag deployments.
Can the Smart Hip Guardian be used for sports or other activities?
The Smart Hip Guardian is designed for older adults to provide additional protection against injuries and fractures from falling. It is not intended for use with sport-type or fast-moving activities.
The Smart Hip Guardian can be worn while engaging in low-impact exercises, such as yoga, but it is not recommended for higher-impact exercises such as aerobics.
Is the Smart Hip Guardian reusable?
The Smart Hip Guardian is usable at all times, until there has been a deployment of its air defense padding. Once there has been a deployment, the Smart Hip Guardian is no longer operable.
Our product intentionally includes a second, back-up Smart Hip Guardian in the initial package so that you always have an operable product to wear.
Please contact our customer service after a deployment occurs for disposal and replacement information.
What happens after the belt deploys?
When the Smart Hip Guardian deploys the airbag, it automatically contacts three (3) designated caregivers. Our response team will attempt to contact the belt wearer to determine if emergency services are required. If they are, or if our team is unable to reach the wearer, emergency services will be contacted.
Information regarding the fall event is recorded and shared back with the Smart Hip Guardian owner to create awareness of the event and to help provide recommendations on avoiding future falls.
Once there has been a deployment, the Smart Hip Guardian is no longer operable. Please contact our customer service after a deployment occurs for disposal and replacement information.
How can I travel with the Smart Hip Guardian?
The Smart Hip Guardian can go anywhere and be worn anywhere. It is recommended that if not being worn, it be unbuckled so that it is not activated, avoiding false deployments.
Is it necessary to use the Smart Hip Guardian app?
The Smart Hip Guardian app is an additional feature that allows for communication and performance details of the product for the user and caregiver. The app will provide details such as charge level, activation time, geo location, and specific information around the occurrence of fall events. Additionally, the user will be able to build and update their account profile on the app. However, having the app is not essential to the function of the belt.
Wearing the Smart Hip Guardian
How do you wear the Smart Hip Guardian correctly?
The Smart Hip Guardian should be worn at hip height with the buckle facing forward; tight enough to stay securely in place, loose enough not to be uncomfortable.
There are large icons built into the Smart Hip Guardian to make wear instructions easy to follow. Additionally, the correct position is shown in the instruction manual, on the Smart Hip Guardian website and app, and through the online video tutorial.
Is the belt comfortable to wear?
The Smart Hip Guardian has been through numerous human factor and daily activity testing to ensure the most comfortable fit and form. It can be worn 24/7, and even while sleeping. Every effort has been made to make sure the Smart Hip Guardian is discreet and unnoticeable.
Can I move freely when I wear the Smart Hip Guardian?
The Smart Hip Guardian is equipped with an algorithm that can distinguish normal daily movements such as sitting, crouching, lying down, going up and down stairs, etc., from a potential fall. However, to avoid unwanted activations, it is not recommended to shake the belt once worn or to make particularly sudden movements (such as jumping, running, or dancing). The Smart Hip Guardian has been tested in various daily activities, and the likelihood of false deployments is uncommon.
Is the Smart Hip Guardian obtrusive?
The Smart hip Guardian color, size, and shape were designed to be as unobtrusive as possible for the wearer, and as discrete as possible for the observer. It does not look like a medical or protection device. Instead, it looks much like an ordinary fanny pack. It can even be hidden under a blouse, shirt, sweater, or other similar clothing, as long as the garment is not tucked in.
Why are the airbags positioned toward the back?
You may notice the airbags are positioned more toward the back than the front. This is because a hip is typically broken by falling laterally (to the side) or diagonally backward. So this positioning provides the most protection for these falls.
Additionally, with the airbags in the back, the coccyx (tailbone) is also protected.
Can I use the restroom while wearing the Smart Hip Guardian?
Yes. As many falls happen during a trip to the bathroom, we designed the Smart Hip Guardian to be comfortable for continuous use.
Can I shower or bathe wearing my Smart Hip Guardian?
No, the Smart Hip Guardian should not be submerged in water. The product is water-resistant, not waterproof. Specific user instructions are available in the Smart Hip Guardian User's Manual on how to handle bathing.
Can I sleep wearing my Smart Hip Guardian?
Absolutely! The Smart Hip Guardian has been designed to be worn 24/7. The only time you cannot wear the Smart Hip Guardian is during bathing, as the product is not waterproof. See the Smart Hip Guardian User's Manual for recommendations and use during bathing.
Can I wear the Smart Hip Guardian with other clothing?
The Smart Hip Guardian can be worn with any form of clothing as long as the shirt, jacket, dress etc. is not tucked in, which would prohibit the personal air defense pads from adequately deploying in the event of a fall and product deployment.
Effectiveness
How effective is the Smart Hip Guardian for hip protection?
In a 3rd party independent study, the Smart Hip Guardian reduced the force impact of a fall by 84% vs. a normal force impact by utilizing airbags to redirect the energy of a fall away from the hip.
The level of force impact occurring while wearing the Smart Hip Guardian was a 44% reduction vs. the amount of impact that would take to normally fracture a hip in an older adult.
Is the Smart Hip Guardian safe to use?
No protective intervention is free from risks. However, 3rd party independent testing shows an 84% reduction in force impact from a fall.
The Smart Hip Guardian employs an inert gas to inflate the airbags, and they are inflated away from the wearer. Additionally, significant practical testing has shown excellent results with no occurrence of injury.
Please consult the Smart Hip Guardian Instructions for Use for more information about safe use and expected adverse events.
What test did the Smart Hip Guardian go through?
The Smart Hip Guardian is a FDA-registered, class 2 medical device.
Briggs Health Solutions conducted an exhaustive 18-month Dynamics of Falling Study at the University of Pittsburgh Bioengineering Human Movement and Balance Laboratory. The results of this testing drove the patented algorithms and thresholds that operate the Smart Hip Guardian today.
Overall, the Smart Hip Guardian testing includes internal and 3rd party independent work, consisting of laboratory settings and real-life activities in senior environments. In total, the product tests produced over 22,000 samplings with 100% accurate deployments and only 1 false deployment with “0” injuries reported.
What parts of the body does the Smart Hip Guardian protect?
The Smart Hip Guardian is specifically designed to protect the hips of older adults. Injuries and fractures to the hips limit mobility and loss of independence, and many times result in death. The Smart Hip Guardian is also designed so that upon a fall and deployment, rebound injuries to other parts of the body are limited, based on the patented quick deflation of the air defense pads.
Is it possible to break a hip first, resulting in a fall?
Yes, but this only occurs with an estimated less than 1% of all hip breaks. Previously, there was no way of accurately identifying these cases. With the advent of our patented technology, movement data in nine categories is recorded before and after a fall. These analytics can accurately determine if the hip broke before the fall. Regardless, the airbag will protect the soft tissue from the sharp edges of the broken bone and prevent additional breaks on both sides of the fall victim. Falling on an airbag with a broken hip can make the difference between a simple fracture and a compound fracture.

Troubleshooting
My Smart Hip Guardian deployed without me falling. What happened?
The Smart Hip Guardian is built with a sensor system that monitors the body's movement in space and an algorithm that recognizes fall events. If the Smart Hip Guardian has been activated inadvertently, it can typically be for 3 reasons:
- The Smart Hip Guardian has been charged and buckled when not being worn. Remember to never buckle the Smart Hip Guardian when it is not being worn, as the system switches on when closed and rapid movements would be recognized as a fall by the algorithm.
- The device, once worn, has been shaken vigorously. Remember to not shake the Smart Hip Guardian abruptly after it has been closed, even if it is being worn, as the algorithm could interpret sudden movements as a fall.
- The user has made movements that could potentially be identified as a fall. The Smart Hip Guardian algorithm is the result of research into a delicate balance between activating suddenly in the event of a fall and not activating during normal daily activities. It may be that, in the case of particularly ambiguous movements the algorithm identifies a dangerous situation and activates itself as a precaution. This is necessary to ensure protection in case of real need.
If there are any questions following the product deployment, the user can always contact the Smart Hip Guardian customer support line.
